Just a while ago reports broke out claiming that Barcelona had tabled a contract offer for AC Milan midfielder Franck Kessie. Now, SPORT is claiming that the Catalans have reached an agreement to sign the 25-year-old on a free transfer.

Kessie has evolved into one of the best midfielders in Serie A since his move to Milan from Atalanta in the summer of 2017. The Ivory Coast international has been a key component of Stefano Pioli’s side that has been challenging for the Serie A title since last season.

However, his future at San Siro has been a topic of heavy speculation since last summer as he entered the final year of his contract. With just four months left on his deal, Milan have been unable to convince him to pen an extension.

And, it seems like Barcelona have pounced on the situation to lure the Ivorian to Camp Nou at the end of the season. The Blaugrana have been holding talks with the player’s entourage for a while now and a breakthrough is believed to have been achieved.

Only a few hours ago, Italian journalist Gianluca Di Marzio claimed that the club had made a contract offer worth €6.5 million per year. Now, the aforementioned report is stating that the two parties have come to an agreement and Kessie is very close to becoming a Barcelona player.

While Barça have no shortage of options in midfield, Kessie is seen as a player who will bring something different to the department, with sources telling the publication that he could essay a role similar to what Seydou Keita did in Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona team in the past.

A physical midfielder, Kessie backs it up with sound technical abilities and has morphed into a consistent goalscorer over the past 18 months as well – something that appeals to current Blaugrana boss Xavi Hernandez.

Given that his market value is believed to be around €50 million, bringing Kessie on a free transfer would be no short of a coup for Barcelona. It remains to be seen if the Catalans are indeed set to sign the 25-year-old in the summer.
