Speaking at a media appearance on the day of his second anniversary of being elected as the Barcelona president, Joan Laporta has confirmed that he wants to hand manager Xavi Hernandez a new contract.

The 43-year-old tactician was brought in by Laporta in November 2021 as a replacement for Ronald Koeman, who was relieved of his duties after a poor start to the 2021/22 campaign.

Since taking over the reins, Xavi has done a fine job, helping Barcelona to a second-place finish in La Liga last term.

This season, the club legend has already won his first trophy as manager, guiding Barça to the Spanish Super Cup triumph, while the Catalans are at the top of the La Liga table and could be on their way to the finals of the Copa del Rey as well.

Xavi’s current contract with Barcelona runs out next year, and Laporta has now gone on record stating that he wants to offer the manager a new deal irrespective of whether the club win La Liga this season or not.

“I’m considering renewing Xavi, even if he doesn’t win the league. I think we have to renew him, he says not yet and that first we have to win La Liga. He deserves it. I’ve considered renewing him,” he said (h/t Mundo Deportivo).

Laporta confirms impending contract offer for Busquets

During the chat, the Barcelona president also confirmed that the club will be tabling a contract offer for captain Sergio Busquets imminently.

The 34-year-old is out of contract in the summer and is attracting plenty of interest. But, the Blaugrana wish to keep hold of the midfielder for another year and are now expected to send in a formal contract offer for him soon.

“Busquets is important and I think Xavi wants him to stay for another year. We have not yet made an offer, but we will make one shortly so that he can continue for one more year. He has to value many aspects: family, country, other offers,” Laporta said.

Despite his advancing age, Busquets continues to be an important player in Xavi’s plans at Barcelona. Furthermore, the club’s Financial Fair Play problems make it difficult for them to sign a top-class replacement for the veteran captain in the summer.

However, if Busquets is to remain at the Catalan outfit, he will have to take a major pay cut as he is one of the highest earners at Spotify Camp Nou.
