With Barcelona making fresh additions to their roster, it is important that they clear out the deadwood from the squad in order to free up space on the wage bill and successfully register the new arrivals.

Some players have already departed Camp Nou this summer and more are expected to be on their way out, with Samuel Umtiti being one among them. The 28-year-old has fallen out of favour at Barça and has been told to find a new club by the management.

The French ace will not be a part of the Catalans’ pre-season tour to the United States of America as he will stay back with other exit-bound stars like Riqui Puig, Martin Braithwaite and Oscar Mingueza to sort out his future.

Umtiti was reportedly closing in on exit in the past week, as a move to Ligue 1 club Rennes was believed to be on the horizon. The French outfit’s manager, Bruno Genesio, had himself confirmed the interest in the defender, having worked with him in the past at Lyon.

However, the move ended up falling through, with multiple reports claiming that Umtiti had failed his medical leading to the transfer collapsing.

But, the 2018 FIFA World Cup winner’s agent was quick to deny those speculations. And now, Rennes manager Genesio himself has come out and addressed the issue, stating that Umtiti did not fail a medical because one was never held.

As quoted by Mundo Deportivo, he said: “I’m sorry for the false information that has been released, I’m sorry for Sam, because in no case did he come to have a medical exam, let alone a test that would not have been conclusive.”

“I also have a commitment to him, and I wanted to say that what has been said is really a bit toxic and very regrettable,” he added.

Nevertheless, with the move collapsing, Barcelona are said to have been left frustrated as they look to find a new suitor for Umtiti.
