After a successful winter transfer window, all attention of the Barcelona offices turns to the renewal of key players. One such asset of Xavi’s team who is close to the end of his contract is Ronald Araujo.
The Uruguayan international’s deal at the club expires in 2023, and his high-level performances have not gone unnoticed, and the player has no shortage of suitors.
Though the Blaugranes made an offer to his entourage a week ago, it was immediately rejected by the player. Araujo is amongst the lowest paid in the team and rightfully demands a wage at par with his prominence.
According to reports from SPORT, Pep Guardiola was seen having dinner with Edmundo Kabchi, one of Araujo’s representatives. This development has rung the alert bells in Catalonia as an offer from Manchester City could pose serious problems in his renewal.
The centre-back wants to stay at Barcelona, where he has grown into the leader of the defensive line. Despite his desire to stay, it would require a heavily improved offer from the La Liga side to ensure his continuity.
Araujo has played 16 games for the Spanish side this season, averaging two tackles, an interception and four duels won per ninety. He has also been an asset in attack, scoring two goals from set-pieces.
Given that he has been the team’s best defender by a mile, Barcelona will do everything in their capacity to keep the defender at Camp Nou. Nevertheless, the club needs to act fast as the player nears the final year of his contract.
