Barcelona midfield mainstay Frenkie de Jong finds himself in the midst of intense transfer speculation.

The 24-year-old has been with the club for almost three years now, but has had his ups and downs. There had been a lot of speculations over his future at the club following the sacking of Ronald Koeman last year but things had quietened down.

However, as we approach the summer transfer window, the rumour mill is abuzz again with reports of de Jong being unsettled at Camp Nou and wanting to leave, even though the manager and the club officials continue to insist otherwise.

Barça’s financial crisis does not help matters as the club are in a sticky situation and need to make a major sale in the summer to help balance the books. It has led to de Jong being linked with an exit, with reports claiming that the Blaugrana would sell him for around €60-70 million.

Manchester United have emerged as a suitor for the 24-year-old Netherlands international. At the same time, there is also interest from the likes of PSG and Juventus. Now, Manchester City, too, have entered the picture as a potential suitor for de Jong.

Pep Guardiola is a huge admirer of the Barcelona midfielder and had made an attempt to sign him from Ajax before his move to Camp Nou in 2019.

Now, Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Manchester City are looking for a new central midfielder in the summer transfer window and continue to rate Frenkie de Jong highly.

However, the Italian journalist adds that the Barcelona midfielder could be an expensive option for the Premier League champions, who are already splashing the cash to sign Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund.

So, even though de Jong is admired highly by the Cityzens, they could look at cheaper alternatives, with Manchester United star Paul Pogba being discussed as an option as he will be available on a free transfer, while Matheus Nunes of Sporting CP is also being considered.

As for de Jong, it remains to be seen what the future holds for the Barcelona star amid continued rumours surrounding his future.
