It is not a secret to the football fraternity that Barcelona are going through a rough patch. With the arrival of the new manager Xavi Hernández, things are looking brighter than before, with all the youngsters contributing immensely. Further, the winter transfer window is within touching distance, which will help the Catalan club to bolster their squad with some requisitions.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Barcelona have identified the Manchester City central defender Aymeric Laporte as their potential target to improve their backline for next season.

The Spanish side have struggled throughout the 2021/22 campaign and are currently sitting in 7th position, accumulating 28 points from a potential 54.

However, under the administration of President Joan Laporta along with Mateu Alemany, the Director of Football of the club, have initiated the process by bringing in Ferran Torres from City.

The midfield seems to be the only sorted area of the pitch for Barça right now. The club have swedged with a shaky defence line for the last couple of years, and it is time for a change. Now more than ever. Andreas Christensen, Cesar Azpilicueta, Matthias Ginter, and Antonio Rudiger are among the players linked, with each of their contracts expiring in June.

Laporte is a left of field option, but could be a key signing for Xavi’s side to enhance the central defence to challenge for every possible title.

Barcelona are in a delicate condition financially and will need to offload deadwood in the roster before fishing in reinforcements. As such, the French centre-back duo of Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti seem to be among the first players looking at the exit door.

Although, it might not be easy to sell the two aforementioned players because of their contract status and recent run of form. It remains to be seen whether Barcelona can bring Laporta to Camp Nou. Or any centre-back, soon enough, at all.
