Barcelona in final stages of 22-year-old defender’s contract renewal – report

Ronald Araujo has been Barcelona’s standout defender this season, leading the backline by example. The former B team defender has quickly climbed through the ranks and is now an undisputed starter for Xavi’s side.
Given his importance, the Uruguayan’s contract renewal was placed as the top priority at the club. His current contract at Barcelona expires in 2023, and several European sides are looking at the possibility of signing him.
The Blaugranas made a contract proposal last week, but it was quickly rejected by the player’s entourage as the wages were deemed too low. Araujo is amongst the lowest paid members in the squad and deservedly demands a hike in salary.
According to reports from Mundo Deportivo, the Uruguayan’s renewal is now in the final stages. Both the parties are optimistic over the negotiations, and an agreement is close.
Barcelona have improved the proposal on the table, but the renewal offer is still far lower than other offers from the Premier League. However, the player’s desire to continue at the Catalan capital was the decisive factor.
In 17 league appearances for Barcelona this season, Araujo has averaged 2 clearances, one tackle, four duels won, and one interception every game. He has also scored three goals, the latest of which came yesterday in front of a full Camp Nou.
Manchester United, Manchester City, and Chelsea have shown interest in the 22-year-old’s signature. However, the option of moving to the Premier League did not appease Araujo.
His willingness to accept a lower offer is another gesture that proves the love and passion Araujo has for the club. The centre-back is thought to be the future of Barcelona’s defence and will likely sign a long-term contract with the club.
