Memphis Depay’s move to Atletico Madrid is yet to be announced officially by Barcelona. However, it is an open secret that the deal has been completed with a total agreement between the parties.

As the transfer nears completion, one is tempted to look back at the options Joan Laporta had on the table concerning Depay.

One of the biggest contenders in his signing other than the Colchoneros were Inter Milan. The Nerazzurri were willing to send Joaquin Correa to Barcelona in exchange for the Dutchman, but that possibility did not live long.

While it was reported that the Catalans liked Correa’s profile, Gerard Romero reports that his signing is now ruled out by the club. He was not, and will not be an option the Catalans consider.

As part of Depay’s move to the Civitas Metropolitano, Barcelona received an additional benefit that they can avail in the summer. Come June, they will have the chance to sign Yannick Carrasco for a fee of just €15 million as a quality reinforcement on their left flank.

Many would believe that the Belgian is a superior player to Correa, who would have arrived at Spotify Camp Nou had Depay signed for Inter.

In 15 games for the Nerazzuri in Serie A this season, the Argentine has scored just three goals and provided one assist. Further, he has started just three of those games.

Having sold Depay to a direct rival, it remains to be seen if Barcelona’s decision pans out well in the long run. After all, the last two times the Catalans gifted Atleti a striker, they won the side the La Liga title.

As for a replacement for Depay is concerned, Correa is not an option that Barça are looking at anymore. Goncalo Guedes of Wolves is being looked at, but Romero suggests that there are doubts about his signing as well.
