Barcelona fans are asking for the club captain Sergio Busquets to get benched after his horror show against Real Madrid in the Supercopa de Espana semi-final.

The 33-year-old was at fault for Real’s opening goal after being dispossessed by Karim Benzema in the middle of the park. With Dani Alves out of position too, Vinicius Jr was quick to exploit the space to put his team ahead.

It might be the age doing the talking, but the club captain hasn’t performed well this season. For someone who was known for his deft touch and flawless passing, a return of nine failed passes during the match is a far cry from his usual standards. Even his overall statistics this season have failed to justify his place in the team.

In 19 La Liga outings, the club captain is averaging 0.4 unsuccessful touches. Furthermore, he gets dispossessed 0.4 times per 90 minutes coupled with an average of 1.6 fouls per game.

Reacting to his substandard return, fans have asked Xavi to bench Busquets and play Frenkie de Jong as defensive midfielder instead. The hashtag #BusquetsEnElBanquillo was trending on Twitter last night, translating to “Busquets On the Bench”.

“Give him the opportunity to cook, it’s been long enough. It’s time for prime Frenkie De Jong,” wrote one user on Twitter.

“Whoever rejected  Paris, Manchester City, and Bayern Munich to fulfil his dream in Barcelona deserves at least his chance in his favourite position,” wrote another.

“I love Busquets with all my heart but he isn’t the same player he was anymore, replace him with Frenkie and let him ball in a pivot,” wrote another Barca faithful.

De Jong, a pivot in Ajax’s dream team of the past, has been used out of position more often than not this season; all this to accommodate Busquets. And this has come at a price of more unsuccessful touches (1.5) per 90 minutes.

All good things eventually find their course, and maybe it’s time for Barcelona to move on from someone who was vital in the past but is now becoming more of a liability in the middle of the pitch.

The treatment of Frenkie de jong is like conspiracy. Why on earth will Barca continue to use De Jong out of position in order to accommodate this incompetent, overrated, lazy Busquet, that passed his prime since 5 years, and continue to blame De Jong for every below par performance by the the team. De jong was acquired to dominate the position ‘once’ occupied by Busy, but what we are witnessing are similar scenerios that had played out over the last 10 years or thereabout, where every defensive midfield brought in to rival Busy are either kept on the bench or frustrated until they depart for more playing times as if Busy has always been that exceptional. From Yaya to Alex song, and most recently Pjanic, to mention a few. It is a shame the players are treated sometimes due nationalities and some other sentimental reasons

If Frankie is sold then it means Barca are not honest to the young man because they use him in a different position all the time

I think it’s unfair to lebel Frankie a failure, he’s done great for the team, especially last season. I also feel he’s better than Busy in the holding midfield role, but we have a fairly packed midfield, so cashing in on him wouldn’t be a bad idea.
We can’t always say he can nolonger deliver, that’s a lie.

If Frankie de Jong is sold, I swear I will stop being a Barcelona fan and rather join Real Madrid, I don’t know why some people just want to be dumb this year

Busquets have been losing the ball too much even during the golden age of Barcelona. The only reason he is rated that high is because you got Messi to bail out the team. Look at the number of high profile matches against quality opponent where he loses the ball in a vulnerable position. Average DM doesn’t get the make so many important mistakes as he does and yet people say he is underrated. Busquets isn’t even good defensively if you see how many times he was out of position (no pace) or no where to be found when the opponent counter attack. Although he is able to create chances once a while, Barcelona should have used someone
Barcelona would have won even more if they have stuck with Toure or other quality CDM.
