With the FIFA World Cup almost upon us, club football across the globe is set to come to a halt imminently. And Barcelona will play their penultimate game before the World Cup break this Saturday when they play hosts to UD Almeria.
It will be a momentous occasion for Barcelona as club legend Gerard Pique has confirmed that it is going to be his final appearance as a player at Camp Nou as he announced his retirement on Thursday night.
On the eve of the game, Pique was spotted training with his teammates in what could be his final session.
But according to Toni Juanmarti, fellow defenders Jules Kounde and Eric Garcia were not spotted training with the squad, casting doubts over their involvement in tomorrow’s encounter.
Both Eric and Kounde picked up injuries during Barcelona’s 1-0 win over Valencia in La Liga last weekend. As a result, the defensive duo missed the club’s midweek UEFA Champions League encounter against Viktoria Plzen.
With both of them not being pictured in training today, it is very much plausible that both Garcia and Kounde will sit out against Almeria at Camp Nou tomorrow.
In such a scenario, Pique could start in his final home game for the club. The veteran centre-half paired up alongside Marcos Alonso in the midweek encounter against Viktoria Plzen and the same defensive partnership could be seen on Saturday night.
Andreas Christensen has been back in training this week, which comes as a boost for Barcelona. But as things stand, all signs point towards Garcia and Kounde being unavailable for the Almeria encounter, paving the way for Pique to start.
