When he decides to hang up his boots, Sergio Busquets will go down as one of the great midfielders of this generation.

Having made his first-team breakthrough in 2008 under then-manager Pep Guardiola, the 33-year-old has been a permanent fixture in the starting XI ever since, amassing a total of 649 appearances for the Catalan giants.

Busquets has been an integral member of the team throughout his senior career and given his standing at the club, has been tipped to retire at Camp Nou, potentially in a couple of years, when his current contract with the Blaugrana expires.

However, El Nacional is now reporting that things may turn out differently as the Barcelona captain is being offered a chance to reunite with former boss, Guardiola, at Manchester City at the end of the season.

It is claimed that the Premier League champions are keen on securing the signing of Busquets as they are looking for a replacement for club captain Fernandinho. The Brazilian defensive midfielder is 36 years old and sees his contract expire at the end of the ongoing campaign.

And, Guardiola is hoping to replace him with the Barcelona skipper. The Citizens are willing to offer him a bumper contract, probably the last big deal of his career, while also giving him the opportunity to keep winning titles, which is currently not possible at Camp Nou with the club going through another rebuild job under Xavi.

Busquets is believed to be weighing up the pros and cons of a move. The Spanish international wants to test himself in the Premier League and reunite with Pep. However, he is aware that he would be playing a backup role to Rodri while it would also mean leaving the city he has spent his entire life in.

In order to persuade the midfielder to move, Manchester City are also throwing in the option of him moving to the USA to play for their sister club New York City FC down the line.

The report indicates that Barcelona would fight to keep hold of their captain. However, if Busquets desires a move, Joan Laporta would not stand in his way, especially with the club believing that they have found a heir for him in Nico Gonzalez.
