Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano recently stated in a video on his YouTube channel that Barcelona are in contention to sign Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz in next year’s summer window.

18-year-old Wirtz is hotly tipped as one of the best up-and-coming midfielders in world football. Transfer market expert Romano confirmed that he will not be leaving Germany this summer.

His ACL injury has ruled him out for a long time, but he is expected to complete one more season with Leverkusen, and his transfer will likely be a significant talking point in 2023.

Real Madrid and Bayern Munich are reportedly keeping a keen eye out for how Wirtz’s situation develops. But Barcelona have a good relationship with his agents and are also in the running to make a move next year.

However, it may be a tough deal to navigate for Barcelona, especially if the reports about his 150-million-euro price tag are proven true. Of course, all of this depends highly on how well he returns from his complicated injury.

Real Madrid have been interested in the youngster, but he has previously stated his long-standing desire to play for Barcelona. With the amount of competition in the middle of the Blaugrana park, however, it seems unlikely they will splash so much cash on Wirtz during trying times financially.

He is currently scheduled to return to action around November this year. If he can replicate his form prior to the injury, a lot of eyes will be watching and waiting to make their move.
