Given their financial situation, FC Barcelona are forced to operate differently in the transfer market, looking out for bargains and cost-effective signings to improve their squad.
The strategy has worked well for the La Liga champions to an extent, with the signings of players like Andreas Christensen, Ilkay Gundogan, Joao Felix, and Joao Cancelo working well so far.
The same plan will continue in 2024 as well as there is unlikely to be much cash to splurge for the Blaugrana.
As a result, they will keep an eye out on quality players whose contracts are running out or footballers who not long ago were top reinforcements but have hit a rough patch and could be available in the market.
Arsenal duo Havertz, Jorginho on the radars
As per Mundo Deportivo, among several players that Barcelona are monitoring, they are also attentive to the situations of Arsenal forward Kai Havertz and midfielder Jorginho.
Jorginho is a player who has been on the Blaugrana’s radars in the past as well, with the club having looked at him as an option to reinforce the pivot position.
And with his contract at Arsenal expiring at the end of the season, the Italian international is once again seen as a potential target, possibly even for the January window.
Arsenal, for their part, are considering selling the Italian as per the report as they wish to bring in Kalvin Phillips from Manchester City and could be open to sanctioning Jorginho’s exit in the winter.
As for Havertz, the German was regarded as one of the best up-and-coming attackers in Europe not so long ago, which led to a big-money move to Chelsea in 2020.
But after three years at the club, he moved to Arsenal this summer in yet another big-cash transfer and has failed to make the kind of start expected.
Nine appearances into the season, the Gunners are said to be getting frustrated as he is yet to score or assist a goal. There is no indication that they are already looking to ship him out, however.
Other players on the agenda
Apart from the aforementioned duo of Jorginho and Kai Havertz, Barcelona are also keeping tabs on other players in similar situations.
Manchester United’s Jadon Sancho and Anthony Martial are two other players on the list while Athletic Club’s Nico Williams is also a target, a much more concrete one than the others.
No moves are being planned right now, but the La Liga champions are keeping themselves informed about their situations and might consider swooping if an opportunity arises.
