Arthur Vermeeren of Royal Antwerp is one of the names that Barcelona are looking at as an option to fill the pivot midfield position in the long run.

The 18-year-old Belgian wonderkid has been on the Catalans’ radars for a while now and is seen as a viable long-term solution for the defensive midfield role.

However, there is growing competition for Vermeeren’s services, particularly from the Premier League.

Earlier today, it was reported that Manchester United and Liverpool were competing with the Catalans for his signing, but it appears that another English club is ready to steal the march.

Arsenal pushing for Vermeeren

Indeed, as per SPORT, Arsenal are very interested in signing Arthur Vermeeren and are pushing to acquire his services from Royal Antwerp as early as the January transfer window.

The 18-year-old had been seen as a priority at Barcelona during the summer, but things changed once Deco took over the reins.

Even though his name was not at the top of the shortlist, the La Liga champions have continued to track him closely, but are aware that they could lose the youngster to Arsenal.

The Londoners have him on their radar and they need to reinforce their midfield this January. He is seen as a risky option, but they seem convinced that he would adapt to the team without any problems.

Arsenal are considering moving forward with their interest and wish to sign him in the winter for €15 million.

Barça have alternatives

Vermeeren, for his part, is aware that he will be on the move either in January or in the summer. But a move to Barcelona appears unlikely now, with Arsenal pushing to sign him in the winter itself.

However, the Catalans have other options for the role, with Corinthians’ teenage prodigy Gabriel Moscardo seen as one such alternative.

Deco has been eyeing the Brazilian wonderkid for some time now and there have been some discussions held about a move for Moscardo as well.
