Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur in transfer tussle for Barcelona striker

Memphis Depay has had an indifferent debut season at Barcelona. Signed on a free transfer last summer after his contract with Olympique Lyon expired, the 28-year-old started the campaign well.

But, his form soon declined while an injury sidelined him for more than two months. During this time, Barça signed Ferran Torres, Adama Traore and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, relegating the Dutchman to a secondary role.

While he has looked good in bits since returning from injury, Memphis finds himself as a mere backup option. It has led to question marks over his future at Camp Nou, especially with the Blaugrana planning to bring in at least another forward in the summer.

Now, SPORT is claiming that Depay could be set for a return to the Premier League as Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have shown an interest in him and made enquiries over his availability ahead of the upcoming transfer window.

Arsenal are in the market for new forwards following Aubameyang’s exit in January. With Alexandre Lacazette, a free transfer target for Barcelona, also expected to leave, the Gunners are keen on adding a new striker to their roster and see Depay as a viable option.

Meanwhile, Tottenham are keen on adding cover and competition for Harry Kane and Son Heung-min in their attacking unit and have identified Depay as a target. Reports have even claimed that the north London club have already lodged an offer for the Dutchman.

Depay, for his part, wants to continue at Barcelona, but only as a frontline option and not in a secondary role. So, there is a possibility of him leaving in the summer window.

With his contract expiring in 2023, Barcelona may decide to let him leave as well, especially considering that the Netherlands international was willing to lower his wage demands to secure a move in the summer.

Apart from Arsenal and Tottenham, there is also interest from Everton and Newcastle United. So, it will be interesting to see if the former Manchester United forward ends up returning to the Premier League.
