Even though it has only been a few days since the summer window closed, the rumour mill is already abuzz with fresh speculations linking FC Barcelona with players for January.

Earlier this week, it was reported that the Catalans could enter the market for a pivot midfielder in the winter window as backup for Oriol Romeu.

Four names are understood to be on the radars of the Catalan club already in the form of Joao Palhinha, Florentino Luis, Jorginho, and Guido Rodriguez.

Now, Roger Torello of Mundo Deportivo is reporting that Barcelona could look at other inexpensive options as well to reinforce the pivot position.

The names of Thiago Alcantara and Adrien Rabiot have been suggested by the journalist as potential cost-effective options as their contracts expire in 2024.

And another name that could end up on Barça’s list for the winter, as per the report, is Fabricio Diaz of Liverpool Montevideo.

Fabricio Diaz could be available for €9 million

Just 20 years old, the defensive midfielder is already the captain of Liverpool Montevideo and has made 100+ appearances for the Uruguayan outfit.

Diaz also led the Uruguayan U-20 national team to the FIFA U-20 World Cup triumph earlier this year.

The 20-year-old pivot midfielder had been on the radars of Barcelona all through the summer, with the player also admitting his desire for a move, saying:

“It’s a dream that a top club as big as Barcelona is eyeing me, it’s fantastic. I am calm, my agent will find the best option for me.”

Nothing materialised in the end though with the Catalans having other priority operations to complete.

Now, with Barcelona looking to sign a midfielder in January, Diaz could be an option, with the report claiming that the Uruguayan prospect could be available only for €9 million.

The deal could be considered if the club’s new sporting director Deco gives his approval.

Diaz a long-term solution?

Given his age and potential, Diaz could be a long-term solution for Barcelona in the pivot midfield position.

With Oriol Romeu settling in well, Diaz could act as the veteran Spaniard’s understudy and learn his trade in Europe before eventually taking over in a few years.

Again, there is nothing concrete at this moment, and much will depend on how Barcelona’s situation is come January, with regard to Financial Fair Play.
