Dropping a huge bombshell, journalist Gerard Romero has claimed on his Twitch channel that Xavi Hernandez and Barcelona are interested in signing Villarreal midfielder Dani Parejo as a possible replacement for club captain Sergio Busquets.

The 34-year-old veteran midfielder is out of contract at the end of the season. And even though Xavi wants to keep him at the club beyond the current campaign, there is a strong possibility that Busquets will be moving to the MLS where Inter Miami are interested.

As a result, the Blaugrana are working on possible replacements for the former Spanish international. Names such as Ruben Neves, Martin Zubimendi and N’Golo Kante have all been linked but come with their own specific issues.

Now, Romero has thrown the name of Parejo as a possible option, claiming that Xavi and his coaching staff are looking at the 33-year-old Villarreal ace as a viable target to reinforce the pivot position in the summer transfer window.

Given that Parejo will be turning 34 in April, Xavi & co. realise that he would be an option for a year or two at the most.

A former Real Madrid academy prospect, the Spanish midfielder has been a mainstay for Villarreal since joining them from Valencia in 2020. His contract with the club expires in the summer of 2024, with Romero claiming that the veteran star’s agent has a good relationship with Barcelona.

That, however, does not mean that a move will go through for certain. But, Xavi and Barcelona are looking at the experienced Spaniard as a possible transfer target for the summer later this year.
