Barcelona kickstart 2022 with an imperative 1-0 away victory to Mallorca. Xavi’s side were without 16 players for tonight’s clash, but fought on, and produced an adequate performance, with a winning goal from Luuk de Jong, a stellar display from Gerard Piqué, as well as late heroics from Marc-André ter Stegen in goal.
Barça started well, although despite heavy possession in the opening half an hour, the ‘Blaugrana’ struggled to really create any meaningful chances. It was Luuk de Jong who turned the game on its head, first hitting the woodwork twice, before heading in the match-winner. In the second period, Barça suffered far more, and came close to losing the points in the final minute, but with an incredible amount of absences, Xavi’s side showed great grit, determination and fight to pick up all three points.
Barcelona now move up to fifth place in the La Liga standings, just one point behind Atlético Madrid in fourth place, and two points behind Real Betis in third. A good start to the new year for Xavi’s Barcelona, who are progressing nicely.
