Barcelona secure an imperative three points at home to Elche, in a must-win game. Xavi’s side started well, and found themselves 2-0 up at half time thanks to first Barça goals from both Ferran Jutlgà and Pablo Gavi. Following some calamitous defending in the second half, Barcelona allowed Elche to level things up, scoring twice in as many minutes, but it was yet another young star who would have the final say, as substitute Nico González fired in the winner with just minutes to play.
In a bizarre game, and one that showed the best and the worst of Xavi Hernández’s side, Barcelona do come out with a much required victory, that fires the Catalans closer to the Champions League places. The sheer amount of young stars dotted all over this current Barcelona side is a huge positive for Xavi and everyone in connection with Barcelona, and the incredible MVP performance by Pablo Gavi, which included an incredible solo goal and a match-winning assist was a joy to behold.
However, there are still clear issues to address for this Barcelona side, if they want to move forward and compete for titles at the highest level. Defensively, Xavi’s side look a mess in all truth. Structurally, a lot of work is left to do to prepare the team to be able to properly cope and achieve its goals.
