Barcelona are defeated by Real Madrid in the Semi-Finals of the Spanish Supercopa, after a thrilling 120 minutes of Clásico football, at the end of which, Xavi can be very proud of his team’s performance. Barcelona bounced back from behind twice, and despite perhaps playing the better football over the course of the tie, were punished by Real Madrid in transitions.
Xavi’s side started poorly, and Real Madrid took a deserved lead in the first half through Vinícius Júnior, although the Brazilian’s goal was cancelled out before half-time by Barcelona’s new-found talisman, Luuk de Jong.
Barcelona controlled large periods of the second half, with Pedri starring in his return to the side, although it was Karim Benzema who struck next for Real Madrid. Barcelona refused to be beaten, however, and picked up a deserved equaliser late on through teenage sensation Ansu Fati, to send the game to extra time.
It was Real Madrid who got the last laugh, however, with Fede Valverde finishing off another smooth Madrid breakaway and sending Barcelona home, perhaps undeservedly. Xavi’s side produced a classy Clásico display, and more than competed against Ancelotti’s Real Madrid. The Catalans can be very hopeful of the team’s future with so many incredible young players coming through.
