Villarreal 0-1 Barcelona: Player Ratings

On a historic winning run, Barcelona had the chance to go eleven points clear of Real Madrid in La Liga as they took on Villarreal at the Estadio la Ceramica.

With the Yellow Submarines winless in their last two and chasing a Europa League, it was never going to be an easy game for Xavi’s man.

Robert Lewandowski and Pedri were at the heart of the action in the first half, creating a chance each for one another. Interestingly, though, the former assisted the latter to break the deadlock, which would also be the only goal of the game.

After a tough tussle against Villarreal, Barcelona will be happy to get the three points, with their eyes towards the Manchester United clash in midweek.

Marc-Andre ter Stegen: 6.5

Untroubled for the most part, ter Stegen made two easy saves. Had trouble playing out the back, though, with Villarreal pressing as high as the Barcelona box.

Jules Kounde: 6.5

Kounde was unsurprisingly comfortable on the ball for the most part, and progressed it well. However, he was caught out every now and then by Yeremy Pino.

Ronald Araujo: 10

Absolute mammoth in defence, Araujo made a ton of incredible clearances in the box. Kept Yeremy Pino and Jose Luis Morales in check, and was by far and large the best player for Barcelona today. One of the best CB performances in the league this season.

Andreas Christensen: 8

Complemented Araujo brilliantly with his intuitive defending. Was aggressive when needed to be, and eventually walks home with yet another clean sheet.

Alejandro Balde: 7

Balde did well to carry the ball out of defence every now and then, but was largely tied down at the back by Samuel Chukwueze.

Pedri: 8.5

Created the first real chance of the game through Robert Lewandowski, and when the Pole could not finish it, took matters into his own hand to score a sensational goal. In terms of breaking lines, though, Pedri looked not as sharp.

Frenkie de Jong: 8.5

The best performer in the first half, de Jong stuck himself to win loose balls, second chances, and every 50/50 duel. A super-sturdy performance by the Dutchman, who has clearly found his place in this team.

Franck Kessie: 8

Kessie filled in for Busquets as the pivot, and was nearly unplayable. Sharp and quick with his decision-making, the Ivorian was barely dispossessed, and did not let any Villarreal players pass through him defensively.

Gavi: 6

Not as lively today as fans have come to expect.

Raphinha: 5

Nothing came off for Raphinah tonight as he struggled to break through the Villarreal mid-block. Also missed a huge chance. Xavi and fans will be hoping he can come back stronger against United, though.

Robert Lewandowski: 8.5

Missed an easy chance early in the game, but more than made up for it by setting up Pedri with a 1-2 combination. Also created a chance for Raphinha, who could not convert it.

Ferran Torres: N/A

Came on too late to warrant a rating.

Jordi Alba: N/A

Did not influence the game enough in the five odd minutes he got to warrant a rating.
