Robert Lewandowski has missed a crucial penalty for Poland during their opening World Cup fixture against Mexico.

The game was goalless at around the hour mark when Lewandowski was brought down by Hector Moreno inside the penalty area. The referee had initially ruled out the appeals, but it was later overturned following a VAR check.

Lewandowski was subsequently tasked with the responsibility of converting the penalty and putting Poland in the driver’s seat.

However, the Barcelona forward was not able to find the back of the net, as his shot towards the lower right corner was comfortably saved by Guillermo Ochoa.

The Mexico goalkeeper, who had built quite a reputation for performing in World Cups, guessed the right direction to save what was a rather timid effort from Lewandowski.

The missed opportunity could prove to be crucial for Poland as they continue to draw goalless against their South American opponent.
