Barcelona are in the market for a new midfielder in the upcoming January transfer window, as has already been confirmed by club president Joan Laporta.

The idea is to bring someone on a loan deal until the end of the season to fill in for the injured Gavi, with several names being looked at as options.

One such option, as per reports, was Manchester United midfield outcast Donny van de Beek. The Dutchman has hardly played in England in recent months and is headed for the exit doors in the upcoming January transfer window.

A move to Eintracht Frankfurt appears to be close to completion for the Netherlands international, but the possibility of coming to Barcelona in January was under consideration.

And now Fabrizio Romano (h/t SPORT) has outlined the two reasons why Barcelona are not signing Van de Beek from Manchester United in January.

Barcelona had doubts about his impact

As per the report, the Barcelona sports management had some doubts about the impact that Van de Beek would make if he was signed in January.

After all, the Netherlands international has hardly played at Manchester United this season, even under a manager who had previously worked with him at Ajax in Erik ten Hag.

His lack of form and minutes were a factor that seemingly dissuaded the Blaugrana from making a move for him in January.

Another factor behind Van de Beek and Barcelona not joining hands in the winter is that the player himself had some doubts about the role he would have in Catalonia.

If he would join, the Dutchman would be behind the likes of Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, and Ilkay Gundogan, who are Xavi’s preferred starters in midfield.

As such, Van de Beek would have been regulated to only a rotation role, but he wanted to join a team where he could play regularly and have some continuity.

In the end, the midfielder is bound for Eintracht Frankfurt and Barcelona are looking at other options.
