Two Premier League midfielders on Barcelona radar for the summer – report

Barcelona’s biggest job ahead of the summer transfer window will of course, be to find a replacement for Xavi, who is set to leave the club as manager at the end of the season.

Elsewhere, though, Barcelona will be keeping a keen eye on the midfielder market. While they want to sign someone who can play in an advanced position, the priority definitely is bringing in a pivot who can take over from Sergio Busquets’ throne in the long-term.

The Catalans signed Oriol Romeu in the summer for €3.5 million in the hopes of plugging the hole in the short-term, but that has not proven to be entirely beneficial.

The former Girona midfielder started quite well, but his performances have rapidly declined since. His future at the club is complicated, and to replace him, Barça have shortlisted five early candidates, according to SPORT, including Amadou Onana and Bruno Guimaraes.

Currently playing for Everton, Onana has been one of the top midfielders in the Premier League over the last couple of seasons. His technical ability to carry the ball under pressure, passing, and ball-winning qualities have impressed Barcelona, who are hoping to sign him in the summer.

That said, the Belgian will not come cheap. The Merseyside outfit have set a €60-70 million price tag on his signature, which will almost definitely be unaffordable for the Catalans.

However, that could drastically change should Everton be relegated from the Premier League this season.

If reports are to be believed, Newcastle United will be looking to offload a couple of their players in the summer should they be unable to make it into the Champions League positions in the Premier League.

One of them could be Bruno Guimaraes, whose price tag is set at around €100 million. Barcelona can only dream of shelling that much money on one player, but previous reports have stated that the blaugranes are ready to include players in the deal to lower the price.
