Barcelona have been dealt with various setbacks this week ahead of their Saturday afternoon clash against Rayo Vallecano.

Gavi has been ruled out with a long-term ACL injury whereas Marc-Andre ter Stegen remains a doubt after picking up a shoulder knock during the international break.

This leaves Xavi with very few options, especially in the middle of the park. And with that in mind, the Barcelona coach may have to improvise a little.

Young trio training with the first-team

Shortly after Gavi’s injury was confirmed, it was reported that Barcelona youngsters Unai Hernandez and Aleix Garrido could enjoy more game-time.

Now, Santi Ovalle has offered an update on the matter, suggesting that both youngsters, in addition to Marc Casado are training with the first team.

The trio of Casado, Garrido and Hernandez are no strangers when it comes to training with the first team. They have been inculcated into the system for quite some time now, even though none of these three players have made more than one appearance for the club.

All three of these youngsters offered certain skillsets that may be beneficial for Barcelona in the weeks to come.

January market, not an option

The report further points out that Barcelona, at all costs, have to rely on their youngsters as they look to replace Gavi for the short-term.

That is because every new player Barcelona sign must only earn 80% of the player he is replacing. For example, in the case of Gavi, who earns around €8 million, Barcelona can only sign someone with a salary of less than €6.4 million.

There is another catch. Barcelona can only sign players for half a season, meaning the new signing can only earn around €3.2 million during the remainder of the campaign.

This complicates things for Barcelona in the market, as the majority of their midfield targets earn significantly more than this sum. The club, therefore, may have no choice but to rely on youngsters like Hernandez, Casado and Garrdio, at least for the time being.
