Seven players Barcelona are looking at to strengthen key position in January – report

After signing Vitor Roque, FC Barcelona’s next objective for the winter transfer window is to sign a new midfielder.

The injury to Gavi and the subpar displays of Oriol Romeu have left the Blaugrana in search of a new midfielder to reinforce the squad in January, especially with the team falling behind in the La Liga title race.

It has been reported that Barça are looking for a player who is capable of playing as both a No. 6 and a No. 8, while also possessing enough experience to come into the squad mid-season and make an impact.

However, FFP problems mean they are not in a position to make a great investment in the new signing unless there is a huge income from somewhere.

With everything in mind, Mundo Deportivo is reporting that Barcelona have the names of the following seven midfield stars on their lists for next month.

Aleix Garcia (Girona)

The 26-year-old Girona midfielder is the latest player to be linked with Barcelona, with reports suggesting that the club would be open to offering Pablo Torre and Oriol Romeu as part of the deal.

Garcia, for his part, has already admitted that he would love to play for Barça if given a chance. But with a contract until 2026 and Girona’s title challenge this term, a move would be hard to pull off.

Amadou Onana (Everton)

The Belgian midfield powerhouse is making a name for himself in the Premier League with Everton, attracting interest from a number of top clubs, including Barcelona.

However, signing Amadou Onana would cost Barça possibly in excess of €50 million, given his contract with the Toffees runs until 2027.

Arthur Vermeeren (Royal Antwerp)

Another Belgian midfield talent on the list, Arthur Vermeeren has been linked with Barcelona for a good part of 2023, with the club even getting a close look at him when they met Royal Antwerp in the UEFA Champions League group stages.

However, Vermeeren is also attracting interest from the Premier League and is not seen as a priority target in Catalonia, meaning he might not be arriving.

The 24-year-old AS Monaco and France midfielder seems a good fit for what Barcelona are looking for in their search for a new midfielder in January.

Fofana is capable of playing in a multitude of positions in the centre of the park, is physically strong, has some experience at this level, and has his best years ahead of him.

Andre (Fluminense)

One of the rising stars of Brazilian football, Andre was close to joining Liverpool in the summer, but nothing came of it. Since then, the 22-year-old has gone on to win the Copa Libertadores with Fluminense and even made it to the finals of the FIFA Club World Cup.

Deco is an admirer of Andre, who can act as a pivot or an interior, but once again, the Brazilian midfielder is not a priority target for Barça at the moment.

Bruno Guimaraes (Newcastle United)

Another Brazilian on the list, Bruno Guimaraes has long attracted interest from Barcelona, but any move in January is next to impossible, considering that he recently signed a long-term contract at Newcastle United.

Any move for the Brazilian would require a big sum and reports have suggested that Barça could sell a superstar to fund a move for him, albeit in the summer. For now, though, it is a no-go.

Lucas Bergvall (Djurgardens)

Meanwhile, this one would be more with an eye on the future, with 17-year-old Lucas Bergvall attracting strong interest from Barcelona after enjoying a breakthrough at Djurgardens in Sweden.

It has been reported that an opening offer worth €4 million has already been made for Bergvall, although it remains to be seen if there is any chance of him arriving in January.
