Barcelona’s search for a new striker seems to have taken them to Serie A. Club president Joan Laporta has identified Fiorentina marksman Dusan Vlahovic as a prospective transfer target claims Gerard Romero (h/t El Nacional).

Vlahovic has grown into one of the most sought-after young forwards in Europe after a fine breakthrough campaign with the Viola in 2020/21. The former Partizan Belgrade youth academy product found the back of the net on 21 occasions in 37 Serie A encounters last term to put himself on the map.

Vlahovic has continued to display his goalscoring prowess this season, having already managed a tally of ten goals and an assist in 12 games in all competitions. The 12-time capped Serbian international has impressed heavily over the past year and a half, with his development catching the eye of Barcelona president Laporta.

It is no secret that the Catalan club’s supremo is on the lookout for an ace goalscorer to fill the void left by the departure of Lionel Messi. Luuk de Jong’s signing has been a disaster so far, while Sergio Aguero’s heart condition has rendered him out of action for the foreseeable future. As a result, Barca are in desperate need of a top striker.

While an emergency signing could be made in January to see out the rest of the season, Laporta has big plans for the summer. Erling Haaland had been the priority target for the Blaugrana. But, the potential costs involved in a deal for the Norwegian and the intense competition has led to Barca looking at alternatives, with Vlahovic emerging as one.

Of the same age as Haaland, the Fiorentina striker would cost much lesser than the Borussia Dortmund star as he would be entering the final year of his contract at the end of the season. Furthermore, the Catalan giants will not have to deal with the notorious super-agent Mino Raiola either.

However, Vlahovic is also a man in demand, with Manchester City, Tottenham, Atletico Madrid and Juventus also keeping tabs on the Serb. So, Laporta and Barcelona will need to act swiftly if they wish to land the 21-year-old from Fiorentina next year.
