As per the latest reports by the reliable Oriol Domènech, Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman has told his long-time target, Memphis Depay not to sign for anyone else and that he will try his best to bring the Dutch forward to Barca if he continues to be patient.
Ever since he arrived in Barcelona, Koeman has targeted several of his favored players from his last job with the Netherlands National Team. Both Gini Wijnaldum and Memphis Depay were expected to be signed from Liverpool and Lyon respectively in the last summer transfer window but due to various complications from both sides, their moves never materialized.
With Koeman making his intentions clear to the Barcelona hierarchy, the Catalans were expected to move again for both players in the next window but since then there have been plenty of developments at the club. The emergence of the wonder-kid, Ilaix Moriba means that the probable signing of Wijnaldum has been ruled out.
However, the Catalans have continued to struggle when it comes to the forward position. Martin Braithwaite, being the only out-and-out striker available at the club, was never signed to be a first-team regular and has expectedly failed to provide the required quality in the position. Koeman has devised and implemented several systems to address this and has usually ended up using a false 9 in the fluid front 3.
Since his failed move to Barca, Memphis Depay has stalled any contract extension talks at Lyon and continued to perform at the highest level with 14 goals and 9 assists to his name, this term. As he enters the final few months of his contract with the French club, he is unsurprisingly drawing interest from clubs around Europe.
Koeman is fully aware of this fact and has reassured the attacker that he will come again if Memphis remains forbearing. It will be interesting to see how the coming months pan out but if Oriol Domènech is to be believed, Depay’s arrival at the Camp Nou is probably a matter of when not if.
