According to journalist Jota Jordi, as discussed on El Chiringuito, the new Barcelona board plans to offer Lionel Messi a wage of 30 million euros per season in his new contract. This would be a massive reduction of well over 50 per cent from his older deal.

Messi, whose current mega-contract with Barcelona expires on the 30th of June this year, is still undecided on his future. Having stated that he will make a decision on his continuity at the end of the season, he will first listen to what president Joan Laporta and his board have to say. The decision will most likely also hinge on how Barcelona compete for La Liga in the remaining eight games as well as the upcoming Copa del Rey final.

Over the past couple of months, Messi’s continuity with Barcelona has seemed increasingly likely. After the nightmares of last season and a faltering start to the current campaign, the landscapes at the club look as though they are changing steadily. The Argentine has also slowly been able to get back to his own self, enjoying being out on the pitch.

Barcelona’s finances, however, are no more a surprise. With a massive debt of over 1.3 billion euros being accumulated, the Catalans are going to have to perform a thorough audit and massively slash on spendings. The overflowing wage bill is one of the biggest issues to address.

Barcelona can no longer afford to offer Lionel Messi a deal as lucrative as the ones he has had in the near past. And if he were to renew, he would have to accept a lower wage given that he is far and above, the highest earner in the team.

Laporta and his team of VPs have stated that they will do their best to ensure the six-time Ballon d’Or winner stays at the club. They also said that the wage negotiations should not cause problems because Messi is not motivated by money, but a winning sports project, which is what they will primarily put forth.
