Last month, there had been a lot of speculations that claimed Barcelona were intent on signing Real Madrid winger Marco Asensio on a free transfer next summer.
The 26-year-old is in the final year of his contract with Los Blancos, who, up until now, have not shown any indication that they wish to renew his deal. And, Barça had emerged as a shock contender for his signing, thanks to their links with the winger’s agent, Jorge Mendes.
There had even been talk of a pre-contract agreement being in place between the two parties already.
However, according to Diario AS, Asensio’s entourage has now dismissed those rumours, stating that they have had no contact with Barcelona, with the winger fully focused on succeeding with Real Madrid and Spain in the World Cup.
“There has been no contact or conversation with Barcelona about Marco. The only thing on his mind is playing for Real Madrid and being in the World Cup,” his camp has told the Spanish publication.
Asensio has lost his prominence in the Real Madrid side this season, with Carlo Ancelotti hardly using him in matches. Despite that, it seems like the Spaniard is still intent on earning a new contract with the reigning La Liga champions.
A move to Barcelona would certainly have been hugely controversial, given the rivalry that exists between the two clubs.
Furthermore, it could have affected the relationship between Barça and Real Madrid, who are reported to be on good terms currently, thanks to their joint efforts to get the Super League project off the ground.
The report states, that if there was truth to the claims that the Catalans had held talks to sign one of their players mid-season, it could have had an impact on the equation that exists between the two giants of football.
So, it seems like there is nothing to the rumours linking Asensio to Barcelona, at least at this point in time. Whether that changes in case he is not renewed by Real Madrid would be interesting to see.
