Barcelona appear to have solved their right-back problems this season after a painfully long wait. The Catalans left no stone unturned in finding their next big right-back after Dani Alves, but only found failure written at every junction.

Sergino Dest was one such candidate who failed to make it big in Catalonia. Once poised as the next big thing from Ajax’s academy back in Netherland, the USMNT star was underwhelming in every aspect after Barcelona purchased him for €21 million.

New beginnings

The Blaugranas were desperate to get Dest off their wage bill last summer, and understandably so given their financial situation. After all, the youngster was not contributing anything solid to the manager’s dynamics.

Eventually, they sealed his exit on loan to PSV Eindhoven for one year, giving the Dutch side the option to make his signing permanent for €10 million. Four months into the new season, PSV have made up their mind and have reportedly decided to sign him permanently.

As revealed by SPORT, however, there is a catch. The Eredivisie side hope to renegotiate the purchase clause with Barcelona and bring down the €10 million price tag against Dest’s name.

The Blaugranas, for their part, have no intention of accepting such a proposal. They understand that the defender is playing regularly and at a high level and thus see the €10 million price to be very reasonable.

If PSV refuse to shell out the sum, they are confident that Dest will have interest on the transfer market after a good showing.

Visible progress

Dest’s previous loan spell in the Serie A did not work out well for the player and was arguably the lowest point he has seen in his career. The move to PSV, however, appears to have revitalised the USMNT star and brought his back to his best level.

He began slowly at the Dutch club as well, but has only grown in stature as games passed by. He is now a regular starter for Peter Bosz’s side and the statistic prove why.

Dest averages 0.6 key passes and over six defensive actions per game for PSV this season in the Eredivisie. In the team’s most recent outing in the UEFA Champions League., he even recorded as special assist to help his side take three points and secure a place in the next round.
