Premier League midfielder set to become Barcelona player ‘sooner or later’ – Gerard Romero

There has been a lot of confusion surrounding Barcelona’s pursuit of a new defensive midfielder this summer.

The coaching staff led by Xavi Hernandez has targeted a host of top-class options such as Martin Zubimendi and Joshua Kimmich. But neither of the two appears to be an affordable option for Barça, owing to the club’s economic situation.

With confusion and uncertainty all around, Gerard Romero claims Barcelona will make a move for Ruben Neves. The Spanish journalist even believes that the Wolverhampton Wanderers midfielder will become a Barça player ‘sooner or later’.

There is no doubt club president Joan Laporta shares an excellent relationship with Jorge Mendes, who is the agent of Neves. The Portuguese has promised Barça in the past that he can engineer a deal for the Wolves star in the coming summer.

Laporta himself has propagated the idea of signing Neves as the ideal replacement for Busquets, but he has been held back at times by Barcelona’s coaching staff, with Xavi doubting the player’s lack of defensive prowess.

But as the Catalans slowly run out of options, Neves might be the last resort. Despite the doubt from the coaching staff, the Portuguese international does come with a good reputation, having made over 250 appearances for Wolves since joining the club in 2017.

The 26-year-old is regarded highly for his technical ability and aggression. He also has a vicious right foot that makes him a threat from long-range.

However, funding a move for Neves could still be tricky for Barcelona, even with the help of Mendes. Wolves have clarified that they have no interest in a player-plus-cash deal and would only entertain a cash offer, which could make things difficult for the Blaugrana.

Therefore, it will be interesting to see how things transpire in the coming weeks and whether or not Neves truly becomes a Barcelona player next season.
