According to Spanish publication SPORT, former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique was absent from the team’s celebration parade after winning La Liga following their 4-2 win over local rivals Espanyol.

The team of champions took to the street of Barcelona on Monday to celebrate their first league titles since 2019 and despite a formal invitation, Pique was nowhere to be seen with the rest of the squad.

SPORT writes that the former defender is completely focused on the Kings League at the moment and despite hinting that he might join the roster, he decided to skip the celebration instead.

The 36-year-old, who decided to call time on his professional playing career midway through the ongoing season, made a total of 11 appearances for the team in all competitions, with seven of them coming in La Liga, making him eligible to win the winner’s medal.

Speaking ahead of the Espanyol game, manager Xavi had confirmed that the team will notify the defender about the celebration.

“Pique is a special case because he retired. He did not go to another team as in other cases. We have thought about it and we will notify him to invite him to celebrate the league with us,” Xavi had said.

Reacting to the manager’s request, the 36-year-old joked that “I’m calm, but you have to win it first on Sunday.”

While it was Barcelona’s 27th league honour, Pique received his ninth La Liga winner’s medal with the recent win. Interestingly enough, the defender has never kept tabs on these numbers.

“I don’t know the leagues I have, I know it would be my 31st title but I don’t know about the leagues,” he added.

Meanwhile, the celebration of Barcelona’s league title included both men’s and women’s teams and the players looked completely in the groove with their sunglasses on.
