Barcelona have faced trouble in several positions on the pitch, especially on either end. The lack of a natural number 9, coupled with multiple injuries and mistakes at the back has resulted in a problematic season for Ronald Koeman. The midfield, however, continues to impress.
Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, and Sergio Busquets have been a revelation for the team all season, and it seems they will meet another fantastic addition soon as Barcelona officially announce the contract renewal of Barcelona B player Nico Gonzalez. His new contract will last till June 2024 and will include a new release clause of €500 million. It has been reported that Nico will be part first-team dynamics next season, and will be available for the pre-season as well.

The Spaniard plays a defensive midfielder for Barcelona B and has been touted to be the long term successor of Busquets at the club. He is part of the new generation of brilliant youngsters to come out of La Masia, including the likes of Ilaix Moriba, Konrad de la Fuente, Ansu Fati, Alex Collado, and others.
Nico will be a beneficial addition to the Barça midfield especially given de Jong’s transition into a more attacking role. The Dutchman was deemed to be the heir to Busquets’ throne but has since seen a shift in role at the club. Nico will allow Ronald Koeman — or whoever the next coach will be — to rotate Busquets, allowing the veteran midfielder to stay sharp. Additionally, the 19-year-old’s involvement with the senior squad will help build a mentor-mentee relationship with Busi himself.
