Marcos Alonso signed for Barcelona in the summer of 2022 on a one-year contract after a long-drawn transfer saga. Eventually, he was allowed to leave on a free transfer by Chelsea as part of the Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang deal.

The Spaniard has been playing third fiddle to Jordi Alba and Alejandro Balde at left-back, but is a constant face in central defence as a left-footed option. Evidently, he has impressed Xavi enough, as Barcelona have officially renewed his contract for another year.

Alonso was at the Barcelona offices today to officially pen his extension, and his new contract will run until 2024.

The veteran defender has not quite caught a break with some sections of the fans, who have publicly expressed their opinion against Barcelona’s decision to renew him.

Alonso has played ten games in La Liga, scoring one goal, but more often makes appearances in cup competitions. He has also scored one goal in the Champions League, and kept one clean sheet in two games in the Copa del Rey.
