Barcelona have issued an official statement providing an update on the injuries of key defenders Jules Kounde and Ronald Araujo.
Kounde picked up a thigh injury on Thursday night during France’s UEFA Nations League fixture against Austria and had to be taken off. The defender returned to Barcelona yesterday and was put through medical tests by the club’s staff earlier today.
As for Araujo, the defender also injured his thigh while Uruguay were playing a friendly encounter against Iran and was taken off less than five minutes into the game. He too flew back to the club immediately after to undergo tests to determine the extent of his injury.
The Barcelona medical staff conducted examinations on both Kounde and Araujo today morning and have now provided details regarding the specifics of their injuries and recoveries.
“Tests carried out this morning on Saturday 24 September have confirmed that first team player Jules Kounde has an injury to the biceps femoris of his left thigh. He is out and his evolution will mark his availability,” the club statement on Kounde read.
“On the other hand, tests carried out this morning on Saturday 24 September have shown that first team player Ronald Araujo has an avulsion of the adductor longus tendon of his right thigh. He is out and his evolution will mark his availability,” the statement said about Araujo.
Since arriving at the club this past summer, Kounde has played in five matches across all competitions for Barcelona and has even chipped in with three assists. The defender is likely to be ruled out for 4-5 weeks and will miss the clash against Real Madrid.
As for Araujo, he has featured in seven of the eight matches that the Blaugrana, missing the Champions League encounter versus Viktoria Plzen. He is expected to be sidelined for three weeks, meaning his involvement in the El Clasico is also a major doubt.
