On Sunday, Barcelona had to fight hard to get a point at Cornella in the Catalan Derby vs Espanyol. Though Xavi’s men seemed to be in control for the majority of the game, two careless moments saw them give up their lead.

The most significant talking point of the game was the injury to Ronald Araujo. Xavi withdrew the Uruguayan centre-back at half time and replaced him with Eric Garcia for the second half.

Earlier today, the club officially confirmed that tests carried out on Araujo revealed that he pulled the Soleus muscle on his left leg. His recovery will dictate his return.

It is speculated that the defender will miss the Catalans’ clash against Napoli midweek. Further, he is also said to be in doubt for the La Liga game against Valencia at the weekend.

His injury puts immense pressure on Xavi’s shoulders, for he is short-staffed in defence. Clement Lenglet and Samuel Umtiti are also unavailable, while Dani Alves is not available for the next three games. Further, Gerard Pique’s red card against Espanyol rules him out for the game at Mestalla.

Araujo has been Barcelona’s best defender this season. In 13 league starts, he has scored three goals and contributed four defensive actions per game.

He made news during the derby last night for his harsh words against Espanyol late in the game. However, an apology issued on social media calmed the storm directed at him.
