After days of speculations, FC Barcelona have officially confirmed that first-choice goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen will be undergoing surgery to fix his back injury.

“First-team player Marc ter Stegen will undergo a surgical procedure this week to address the lower back issues he is experiencing. Following the procedure, a new statement will be given,” the statement from the club read.

Ter Stegen has been dealing with the back problem since last month, which led to him missing Germany’s fixtures during the international break.

Upon returning to Barça, it was expected that he would recover quickly, but that has not been the case. As such, the 31-year-old has already missed three games against Rayo Vallecano, FC Porto, and Atletico Madrid.

Reports suggested that with conservative treatment not having the desired effect, surgery was on the table. And, the decision was reportedly made today after the goalkeeper studied all his options.

Now, Barça have officially confirmed that he will go under the knife later this week, following which a clearer picture of his recovery timeline could emerge.

The player himself has issued a statement on the matter on his social media, which reads: “After intensive conversations with the medical team of the Club and various supporting experts, we decided to undergo a surgical procedure.

“The break obviously annoys me. It is the right and safe decision in order to come back in the best conditions for my club FC Barcelona and the German National Team.”

For now, there have been contradicting reports about when Ter Stegen might come back, with some suggesting that he could be out for 2-3 months while others suggest that he could return in less than two months.
