Barcelona were handed a fresh concern last night as star man Robert Lewandowski was taken off with an injury during the match against FC Porto.

Having carried out the requisite tests on the 35-year-old, the Blaugrana have issued an official statement confirming that the key centre-forward has suffered an ankle sprain.

“Tests carried out this morning have revealed that Robert Lewandowski has a left ankle sprain. He is out and his recovery will determine his availability,” the statement read.

Worse than expected

Reports had already suggested that Lewandowski’s injury had inflamed today and that he would be missing the weekend’s encounter against Granada.

But it appears that his condition is worse than initially expected as reliable journalist Toni Juanmarti is reporting that Lewandowski will be out for a month.

As a result, the 35-year-old will now miss the huge El Clasico against Real Madrid set to take place at Estadi Olimpic Lluis Companys on October 28.

This comes as a devastating blow for Barcelona who are already without key players such as Pedri, Frenkie de Jong, and Raphinha.

While Raphinha and Pedri are expected to return after the international break and in time for the Clasico, De Jong is unlikely to make it.

Now, Lewandowski also looks certain to miss the crucial game against Carlo Ancelotti’s side while he will also be unavailable for matches against Granada, Athletic Club, and Shakhtar Donetks before that.

Xavi will have to rely on Ferran Torres and Joao Felix in the coming weeks to make up for the absence of his leading goalscorer.
