Official: Barcelona captain Alexia Putellas wins the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award

Barcelona Femini were dominant as ever last season, cruising to La Liga with ease, and reaching the final of the UEFA Champions League final for the second successive year. They were unable to lift it again, though, losing to Olympique Lyonnais in the finals.
Through this historic run, Barcelona’s captain Alexia Putellas was the everpresent constant, scoring 11 goals – the highest – in the UCL, and giving two assists. She was on target in the finals as well, but it was nothing but a mere consolation for the Catalans.
While the team lost on a collective lever, Alexia Putellas has been awarded the UEFA Women’s Player of the Year award for 2022.

This is the second consecutive year she is being honoured with the prize. She won it last season as well, as Barcelona won the historic treble, destroying Chelsea 4-0 in the finals.
Unfortunately, Alexia was ruled out of action from the UEFA Euros due to an ACL tear and will not grace the pitch for a few more months. Barcelona will be hoping they can keep up without their captain until then.
