Barcelona have been rocked by Jordi Alba’s decision to leave Camp Nou at the end of the season. The veteran defender has decided to follow in the footsteps of Sergio Busquets and part ways, in the midst of Barça’s economic crisis.
Although Barça insisted Alba continue for yet another year, the left-back had already made a decision. He will no longer be a part of the senior side, starting from next season.
After the announcement was made, Lionel Messi has written a heartfelt message to Alba. He thanks the veteran defender for his success at Barça and wished him all the best.
“You were more than a teammate, a true accomplice on the pitch. And how nice it is to also be able to enjoy how well we get along personally,” Messi wrote on Instagram.
Messi and Alba were part of the same Barcelona team for 12 years before the Argentine eventually joined Paris Saint-Germain in 2021. Their understanding of each other’s movements made them one of the most feared duos in Spain.
During their time at Camp Nou, the duo notably won the Champions League title in 2015. They also won five Spanish league titles.
Messi wished Alba all the best for his future, adding, “You know that I always wish you the best and also your family, I hope your new stage continues to bring you much success and joy. Thanks for everything, Jordi. A big hug!”
Lionel Messi had written a similar heartfelt message to Sergio Busquets when he announced his decision to leave Camp Nou at the end of the season. Having played with these two Barça veterans for years, Messi certainly had emotional attachments to their decisions.
But ironically, Busquets and Alba’s departures could help Messi’s cause, as he looks to return to Barcelona this summer. Their exits could help the club save significant salary mass, which in turn, could allow them to make enough economic provision for Messi this summer.
However, time is running out for Barcelona, especially with the Argentine’s father being seemingly attracted to a move to Saudi Arabia. The club, therefore, must act swiftly if they are to seal the return of their prodigal son.
