It is no secret that Barcelona are on the lookout for a new pivot midfielder having bid goodbye to Sergio Busquets last summer.

Even though Oriol Romeu was brought in, the Spaniard’s form has been declining over the course of the season, warranting the addition of a top-quality pivot, which is the club’s main aim for the summer of 2024.

One player who has been linked with a move to Barcelona to reinforce the position is Atalanta’s Brazilian enforcer Ederson, who has been excelling since joining the Italian outfit in 2022.

Deco an admirer, but Manchester United sniffing around

Indeed, as per SPORT, Ederson is very much on the radars of Barcelona, with the club’s sporting director Deco understood to be a huge admirer of the 24-year-old.

Barça already approached Ederson in the summer of 2023, but their financial situation did not make it easy to open a negotiation process with Atalanta. And eventually, they ended up signing Romeu instead.

However, Barcelona are set to face a major hurdle in their bid to sign the Brazilian midfield star as Manchester United have entered the picture.

The Red Devils are looking to bolster their midfield ranks after an abysmal start to the current campaign. And, Ederson has been identified as a potential target, with the report claiming that they are set to table an opening offer for him imminently.

While there are no negotiations between clubs yet, Manchester United see the midfielder as a priority and are expected to send an offer soon.

Rising value

Apart from the interest from Manchester United, another concern for Barcelona in their pursuit of Ederson is his rising market value.

The 24-year-old’s market value as per Transfermarkt was at €20 million during the summer but has now shot up to €27 million in December 2023.

Furthermore, the report from SPORT claims that his actual transfer fee could rise above €40 million, something that could be an issue for Barça.

As such, despite Deco’s admiration, the Catalans may end up missing out on the Brazilian midfield star.
