Manchester United have made headlines by terminating the contract of Cristiano Ronaldo recently. According to SPORT, the Portuguese international’s departure could pave the way for the Premier League giants to make a January move for Memphis Depay.

It appears the club are desperately looking for a couple of forwards and a midfielder, as requested by the coaching staff. The report suggests Depay has emerged as one of the top targets for Manchester United, in their quest to reinforce their ranks in the offensive unit.

Man United coach Erik ten Hag is a huge admirer of Depay. He knows the player well and admires the way he has matured as an attacker in recent years. Therefore, the Barcelona forward is one of the players requested by the Dutch tactician.

However, the Premier League giants are open to signing Depay only if the player is available on a free transfer in January.

This is where Barcelona come into the picture. The report suggests the Catalans are open to handing Depay a letter of freedom as long as they do not have to pay his salary throughout the remainder of the campaign.

Depay himself has appeared keener in leaving Camp Nou in the winter transfer window, knowing his role in the Barça team could dwindle further as the season progresses.

However, it is fair to point out that Barcelona might look to play the waiting game before they make a decision on handing Depay a letter of freedom.

With the former Lyon starlet participating in the ongoing World Cup, they are aware of the fact that his performances could skyrocket his valuation.

Therefore, it might be a bit too early to draw any conclusion on Depay’s future, especially in the midst of the World Cup.

The forward himself will not take a decision on his future until after the tournament in Qatar. But a return to Old Trafford could be a possibility for Depay, as Manchester United are desperate for attacking reinforcements especially now that Ronaldo has left.
