Barcelona have seemingly missed out on yet another young talent from South America as Manchester City are all set to sign Argentine whizkid Claudio Echeverri from River Plate.

The Blaugrana had recently seen one of their midfield targets, Gabriel Moscardo, agree to sign for Paris Saint-Germain from Corinthians.

And, now they will see another such gem from the South American continent slip out of their grasp.

Agreement reached

Indeed, as per Ed Aarons of The Guardian, Manchester City have reached an agreement with River Plate to sign Claudio Echeverri, beating Barcelona and other suitors in the race for the teenage wonderkid.

Regarded as a generational talent, the 17-year-old Echeverri has been making waves in South America for a while now.

More recently, he showcased his unlimited potential on the world stage at the FIFA Under-17 World Cup in Indonesia, following which interest in him grew multifold.

Barcelona, for one, were among Echeverri’s most ardent suitors and had expressed a desire to match his release clause which stood at €25 million.

However, given their Financial Fair Play situation, such a move was always unrealistic and now Man City are close to finalising his signing.

As per the report, Manchester City and River Plate have reached an agreement over a deal worth €25 million. And the Premier League champions have convinced the youngster, known as ‘El Diablito’ to sign a long-term and close the deal.

The operation will be structured similar to the way the Cityzens had done with Julian Alvarez in 2022, with Echeverri signing for them in January but staying on loan at River Plate until the summer before moving to England permanently.

Barça, for their part, will rue missing out on one of the most exciting talents emerging from South America.
