With the January transfer window out of the way, Barcelona have now shifted their focus towards contract renewals for some of the key first-team members.

A new deal for Ronald Araujo is in the works, with his contract running out in 18 months. Academy graduate and breakout star Gavi finds himself in a similar boat to the Uruguayan international, with his current deal expiring in the summer of 2023.

The 17-year-old has enjoyed his breakthrough campaign this time out, quickly becoming a key component of Xavi Hernandez’s team. He has made 26 senior appearances so far, scoring two goals and setting up three more.

Able to do the job in midfield or even from the flanks, Gavi has proven to be a valuable member of the team, and Barcelona are keen on rewarding him with a new and improved long-term deal.

However, despite talks being held, a deal is yet to be finalised, leading to clubs from the Premier League snooping around. According to reports in English media, as relayed by Fichajes, Liverpool, in particular, are intent on swooping him away from Camp Nou and are monitoring his situation closely.

Jurgen Klopp & co. are looking for reinforcements in midfield having not replaced Georginio Wijnaldum last summer. With James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Thiago Alcantara not getting any younger, there is room for a new addition in the middle of the park at Anfield.

And, Gavi has jumped up to the top of the list for Liverpool. With the Reds sniffing around the situation, Barcelona will need to act fast and secure the Spanish international’s contract extension.

Apart from the Merseysiders, the likes of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain are also tracking the situation, making it imperative that Barça seal the deal with regard to Gavi’s new deal at the earliest.
