According to the latest update from Gerard Romero, Lionel Messi is no longer interested in renewing his contract with Paris Saint-Germain and wishes to return to Barcelona in the summer transfer window.

The 35-year-old’s current contract with Les Parisiens expires at the end of the season and contradicting reports have been doing the rounds regarding his future for a while now.

Earlier it was strongly suggested that Messi is keen to continue at PSG for one more year, but of late, the tune has changed. The seven-time Ballon d’Or winner is reportedly now looking to leave Parc des Princes and is prioritising a return to Barcelona.

The update from Romero states that Messi and Barça manager Xavi had a lengthy chat before the World Cup and the Argentina captain asked his former teammate to wait until the tournament was over.

After winning the World Cup in Qatar, Messi is understood to have told his entourage that he wishes to return to Barcelona in the summer.

The global superstar believes that his family is not settled well in Paris, whereas Barcelona feels like home.

Furthermore, the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner has not been treated very well by PSG fans, who have been whistling and jeering him for the team’s downfall. It might have also played a part in Messi’s decision to not continue at the club if that is indeed the case.

However, returning to Barcelona will be anything but straightforward, with the club needing to sort out their Financial Fair Play issues before thinking about any moves in the summer.

Until solutions to those problems are found, things will be tricky for Barça as they will not have a clarity about the kind of contract that they can offer their former captain.
