Even after three months into the year, Lionel Messi’s future has remained unresolved as the attacker faces a vital decision between choosing to stay at PSG or rejoin his old club FC Barcelona.

The Argentine ace was approached by Saudi Arabian and MLS clubs as well, but it appears he is keen on remaining in Europe for at least one more year. This leaves PSG and Barcelona as the only options.

While Messi’s desire to stay one more year in Europe has been well-documented, Spanish journalist Sique Rodriquez has recently claimed that the Argentine international also wants to win another Ballon d’Or.

It might not seem too long since Karim Benzema won the 2022 Ballon d’Or. But the race for the 2023 Ballon d’Or is well and truly on, with Messi still the favourite for leading his country to FIFA World Cup glory at the end of last year.

However, it must be noted that by the time votes are cast, World Cup might be a distant memory as it took place in the middle of the 2022/23 campaign. Not to mention, Messi’s performance levels have dropped since the turn of the year, with PSG also being knocked out of the Champions League.

This could play a major role in convincing Messi to remain in Europe for one more year, as it could significantly help him boost his chances to maintain his candidacy and secure his eighth Ballon d’Or by the start of next year.

In the midst of all this, there have been mixed reports regarding Messi’s desires, with some claiming that the 35-year-old is dreaming about a potential return to Camp Nou.

Only time will tell what the future holds for Messi, as he enters the final phase of his career.
