Barcelona have suffered a setback in their pursuit of Leeds United winger Raphinha, as the Premier League club have knocked back the Catalans’ opening bid for the winger, reports SPORT.

Heading into the summer transfer window, the 25-year-old Brazilian has emerged as a priority target for Barça, who are on the lookout for a wide player to replace contract rebel Ousmane Dembele.

Talks have been ongoing with his agent, Deco, with personal terms believed to be no problem as the former Rennes winger is keen on making the switch to Camp Nou. Encouraged by this, Barcelona lodged their first bid for Raphinha, submitting an offer of €35 million.

However, as per the aforementioned report, their opening offer has been rejected by Leeds United, who have pointed the Blaugrana towards the €75 million release clause that exists in their star attacker’s contract.

Despite the blow, Barcelona remain optimistic about signing the ex-Rennes ace come summer and will restart fresh negotiations with Leeds United to strike an agreement for the Brazilian international.

It is claimed that Raphinha has also halted contract talks with the Whites in order to secure an exit in the upcoming transfer window, which only boosts Barça’s chances further.

The attacker signed for Leeds United in 2020 from Rennes and became an instant hit in the Premier League, helping them achieve a mid-table finish in their first season back in the top-flight after 16 years.

He has continued in the same vein of form this season even though Leeds have found themselves mired in the relegation battle. But, Raphinha has shone brightly and has been attracting a lot of interest from top clubs.

Indeed, apart from Barcelona, the likes of Liverpool and Bayern Munich are also keen on the Brazilian international. Chelsea, too, would have been a contender to sign him if not for the sanctions imposed by the UK Government on their owner Roman Abramovich.

Barça may have seen their €35 million bid get knocked back. But, the club’s negotiators remain confident of reaching an agreement with Leeds over an affordable price in the coming weeks.
