Speaking in an interview with Onda Cero, RCD Mallorca midfielder Sergi Darder has confirmed that he could have joined FC Barcelona during the summer transfer window earlier this year.
Darder was one of several midfielders linked with Barça during the summer, with manager Xavi Hernandez and the club looking for cost-effective options to strengthen the roster in the centre of the park.
Darder, at the time, was still with Barcelona’s Catalan rivals Espanyol, and was the captain of the club no less.
So, it goes without saying that a move to Barcelona from Espanyol, who were relegated from La Liga last season, would have been quite controversial.
Darder has now revealed that he indeed had a chance to join the Blaugrana during the summer and even though it was hard to say no to a club of Barça’s stature, he did so owing to his past with Espanyol.
“I had the chance to sign for Barcelona in the summer. It was a very difficult time. It’s hard to say no to a team like that but when I thought about it coldly my head wouldn’t let me do that. There wasn’t even 1% on my part to go,” Darder revealed.
Having decided not to sign for Barcelona, Darder ended up moving to RCD Mallorca. The 29-year-old has been a regular for his new club, featuring in 13 matches and registering three assists.
As for Barcelona, they signed Ilkay Gundogan and Oriol Romeu to strengthen the midfield, with Xavi’s request for another interior going unfulfilled.
