Juan Foyth has been on the radars of FC Barcelona since last summer as a possible reinforcement in the right-back position.

The Argentine international is manager Xavi Hernandez’s preferred option to strengthen the full-back slot on the right side. The Catalans had made attempts to sign him last summer but an injury during the transfer window put paid to hopes of a move.

However, Barcelona have continued to maintain an interest in Foyth, who was part of the Argentina squad that won the FIFA World Cup 2022 in Qatar.

But, according to the latest reports from Mundo Deportivo, the 25-year-old defender is very skeptical about his chances of joining Barça this summer as he believes Villarreal will demand a very high price to sell him.

Foyth’s contract with the Yellow Submarine runs until the summer of 2026 and it comes with a massive release clause worth around €54 million.

Villarreal, thus far, have been reluctant to negotiate a lower fee for their right-back and will continue to point at his buyout clause if Barcelona make approaches to sign him.

But given the La Liga leaders’ delicate financial situation it is unfathomable for them to spend such an amount on a single player when they are also looking to strengthen several other positions.

As such, Barcelona are unlikely to meet Villarreal’s demands even though Xavi has requested the club to make efforts for his signing.

With neither club willing to move from their positions, Foyth and his environment understand that there are very few chances of him signing for Barcelona in the summer.

The Blaugrana have several other names on their table such as Diogo Dalot (Manchester United), Jeremie Frimpong (Bayer Leverkusen), Thomas Meunier (Borussia Dortmund), and Joao Cancelo (Manchester City). However, each of them come with their own set of complications.

As such, there are some within the club offices who believe that they can continue with Jules Kounde, Sergi Roberto, and Ronald Araujo as their options at right-back.

But at the same time, there are others who see that the Frenchman is not entirely comfortable at right-back and want to sign a natural.

So, it remains to be seen which way Barcelona decide to sway in the end.
